In our current climate of an active pandemic, public health has taken center stage. This attention has brought much interest to the public health career field. Public health is a multidisciplinary pathway that promotes good health and quality of life in various populations by incorporating epidemiology, biostatistics, and health services. In SC, we are starting a Public Health Pathway in Health Science Education. Public Health/Epidemiology instruction has expanded in part because it increases student critical thinking and scientific literacy, promotes students’ perception of public health as both practical and relevant, and empowers students as independent, lifelong learners Embedding the public health curriculum into existing and continually shifting curricula is challenging and time-consuming, especially for teachers not trained in the field. Currently, available teaching resources emphasize content rather than thinking skills. They, therefore, do not optimally promote students’ engagement with an in-depth understanding of the mission and goals of public health. With support from the SC DOE, I propose a new framework for high school health science courses drawn from progressive education ideology. This presentation will provide multiple examples to show how this public health curriculum has been used in my classroom to increase critical thinking skills in high school students.

Health Professions Week (HPW) is a virtual event which allows teachers and students to explore over 20 careers in the health professions. HPW is supported by online and virtual events which focus on career awareness & education. HPW is designed to increase the diversity of young people interested in pursuing a health career. Health science textbooks tend to focus on employment opportunities that have been in existence for decades if not centuries. A big part of what has been missing in our current pedagogical practices is the linkage between health science and the many new advancements in health and scientific technologies that are used in every facet of healthcare which range from clinical practice to administrative functions. The World Economic Forum asserts that 60% of jobs in the future do not currently exist. However, the skills that are needed such as adaptive thinking, and an understanding of new and emerging healthcare technologies are not currently being taught. The purpose of this workshop is to share new insight on newer health science career fields that are not currently being discussed in textbooks and to provide ways that faculty can introduce students to these 21st century opportunities. This workshop will benefit participants by giving them ways to incorporate or share advancements in health science technologies into the classroom.

This session will provide a brief background of key emotional-social intelligence skills that positively impact academic and practice performance outcomes in health education and practice. A recent summary of the literature on the state of emotional intelligence in health education at the undergraduate level will be provided. There is evidence to support emotional intelligence significantly impacts academic performance, workplace outcomes, and role performance. Increasingly, health profession education programs are taking a holistic approach to evaluating candidates. To apply the best evidence, recommendations and examples of teaching and learning strategies for emotional-social intelligence growth will be provided. Examples will primarily be centered around the context of the skills and traits desired by health education programs and health professions.

During the 2019-2020 school year, the health science and biotechnology programs began to explore collaboration in a cross-curricular fashion. This allows for meeting standards and competencies in differing programs. In addition, it creates authentic experiential learning to occur within real world project-based and problem-based lessons. How do you truly know if a student understands what you are teaching? Project-based learning, or PBL as it is referred to in the world of education, is a way to gain insight into the depth of understanding a student has about a topic, subject or idea. Activities that highlight one idea or concept does not necessarily mean the student understands the whole concept and its effect. It just means they understand the outcome or function from that activity. Learn to create a Project Based Learning project that will allow students to show they have gained insight and a true knowledge through solving a complex problem with extended time to research and investigate real world problems and challenges.

This session will focus on specific things pre-health counselors and academic advisors can do to better prepare their students for entering careers in medicine. The talk will focus on counseling high school and undergraduate students to obtain the key academic milestones, clinical experiences, and how to best prepare for applications and interviews in these competitive programs.

The focus of my workshop will be looking at the history of the SEL movement and the role that career and technical programs play in the successful implementation of a balanced academic, social and emotional learning experience for the 21st century student. Additionally, the core values of school climate, student engagement and the concept of school connectedness as indicators of college and career readiness, acquisition of 21st century Skills as students transition into the post secondary workforce.

HOSA is not a club to which a few students in school join. Rather, HOSA is a powerful instructional tool that works best when it is integrated into the health science curriculum and classroom.

Following many independent inquiries from dentists, national and state dental associations, career technical education departments and other organizations regarding a shortage of qualified entry level dental assistants, learn how DANB and the DALE Foundation are meeting these challenges by establishing an Entry Level Dental Assisting Curriculum Task Force. Respiratory Therapy is an exciting and rewarding career centered around caring for all patient populations who have cardiopulmonary disorders that make breathing difficult. Respiratory Therapists assess patients, perform diagnostic tests, administer treatments, and educate patients about their disease. Respiratory Therapists work in all Intensive Care Units (ICUs) where they are considered the experts in airway management and providing mechanical ventilation to critically ill patients. Due to an aging population and expansion of the profession, the job growth is estimated to increase by 28% by the year 2030. Unfortunately, the profession is not as well-known as other health professions and many people don’t understand the role of the Respiratory Therapist. The current COVID-19 pandemic has put Respiratory Therapists’ contributions front and center, truly fighting on the frontlines of this disease. Respiratory Therapists are assessing these patients’ breathing, administering oxygen therapy, assisting or performing the procedure to place a breathing tube, and managing the mechanical ventilator. Respiratory Therapists save lives every day, and we need many more to join the profession to continue to provide compassionate, skilled, and competent care to all those who need a breath of fresh air.

Four Diamonds Mini-THON is a student-led turnkey project that is hosted in close to 300 schools with more than 90,000 students participating and raising over 7.2 million dollars last year. This program will augment the teachings of the classroom where students can participate in experiential learning and apply their classroom knowledge within their community by fundraising for pediatric cancer research. Childhood cancer is the leading cause of death by disease in the US. The national budget only provides 4% of its funding to pediatric cancer research. Families rely on programs like Four Diamonds Mini-THON to supplement the research. Your students can be part of finding a cure through this hands-on program developing their leadership skills, critical thinking and improving school culture.

This presentation addresses the importance of pairing with a pedagogical colleague who possesses the experience and expertise to help ease the transition from working in the health care industry or the post-secondary classroom into the secondary classroom. Highlights include the value of that relationship, the importance of SEL and improving student engagement through differentiation and challenging/rigorous learning.

Students need to see how their core science learning relates to health science! After serving as a zoo director for 33 years of which about 20 years he also did medical education veterinary zoo care, the presenter has been teaching high school science for the past 10 years. He has developed a health careers pathway with a strong partnership with the local rural hospital and WILL share specific activity supports he has developed for the various health science industry-recognized certifications! When the pandemic hit, his students continued moving forward using his self-directed technology learning supports for the various health industry certifications: Certified Nurse Aide, Certified Medication Aide, Medical Lab Technician, Certified Pharmacy Technician, and Certified Phlebotomy.
